Beginning levels of mathematical and quantitative reasoning components have been taught within specific general education courses for years. The goals of these courses included teaching students to:
      • Use arithmetic and elementary algebra to solve problems;

      • Use mathematical representations such as formulas, graphs, tables.

      The courses in which the beginning levels are taught were reconceptualized in the early 1990s to focus on learning this mathematical content in connection with contexts familiar to students from everyday life or other courses they were taking. After this revision, we measured a significant improvement in the success levels of our students in these courses.
